Therapy for The Modern Mom
Struggling with Fertility, Perinatal Anxiety, Perfectionism and Mom Guilt
virtually across New York State
Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and like there’s no way you could possibly be getting this “right”?
The messaging around what it means to be a “good” mom is both overwhelming and often contradictory. While we used to turn to our village of surrounding relatives and friends for guidance, now we often turn to the internet, where we are flooded with polarizing information on everything from how to become pregnant, to sleep training, to tantrums.
It’s no wonder you feel like you’re falling short, even when you’re trying your best.
Anxiety, guilt, and the pressure to do it all don’t have to define your motherhood journey.
Hi. I’m Joy. A licensed therapist specializing in support for perinatal and postpartum women and mothers.
People Come to Me With:
Conflicting feelings around social media; on the one hand, the sense of connection may be comforting, on the other, it may lead to even more anxiety
An overactive nervous system, or a constant feeling you are on “edge”
Disconnection from your sense of self
Catastrophic anxiety or intrusive/racing thoughts
Unreasonable expectations of self
A shift in your relationships
Body image concerns
Emotional overwhelm, irritability, or difficulty relaxing
Loneliness
Matrescence
Matrescence is the emotional, physical, and identity shift a person goes through when becoming a mother. Just like adolescence is the transition from childhood to adulthood, matrescence is the transition into motherhood—a time of big changes in your body, relationships, priorities, and sense of self. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of joy, grief, anxiety, and growth as you adjust to this new chapter.
Therapy can be especially helpful during this time, offering support, clarity, and space to process all the complex feelings that come with becoming a mother.
slow down, feel heard, and learn tools to support yourself and your baby with more confidence and self-compassion.

What approaches will be useD to support You?
Here are examples of the kinds of interventions we may use to guide your work together:
-
IFS helps you explore the different parts of you—like the anxious protector, the perfectionist, the inner critic—and understand what they need. You’ll learn how to shift out of self-judgment and into deeper self-trust.
-
CBT can help you challenge unhelpful thought patterns and reframe beliefs like “I’m not doing enough” or “I have to be perfect.” This helps reduce anxiety and increase emotional flexibility.
-
Learn simple, evidence-based mindfulness techniques to calm your nervous system, respond (rather than react) in parenting moments, and reconnect with your body and breath.
-
We’ll also integrate practical parenting support tailored to your child’s developmental stage, your values, and your emotional needs as a mother. You don’t need one more rigid parenting method—you need guidance that meets you where you are.
