While we used to turn to our village of surrounding relatives and friends for guidance, now we often turn to the internet, where we are flooded with polarizing information on everything from how to become pregnant, to sleep training, to tantrums.

It’s no wonder you feel like you’re falling short, even when you’re trying your best.

Hi. I’m Joy. A licensed therapist specializing in support for perinatal and postpartum women and mothers.

Matrescence

Matrescence is the emotional, physical, and identity shift a person goes through when becoming a mother. Just like adolescence is the transition from childhood to adulthood, matrescence is the transition into motherhood—a time of big changes in your body, relationships, priorities, and sense of self. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of joy, grief, anxiety, and growth as you adjust to this new chapter.

Therapy can be especially helpful during this time, offering support, clarity, and space to process all the complex feelings that come with becoming a mother.

What to Expect

With advanced training in IFS, CBT, mindfulness, and parenting support, my approach is warm, down-to-earth, and collaborative—drawing from a psychodynamic, attachment-based, and trauma-informed practice. 

Through our work you will learn to:

  • Make space for your full emotional experience while building skills to cope and grow. 

  • Build awareness of and connection to emotions 

  • Find self acceptance

  • Learn to navigate a season of change

What approaches will be useD to support You?

Here are examples of the kinds of interventions we may use to guide your work together:

  • IFS helps you explore the different parts of you—like the anxious protector, the perfectionist, the inner critic—and understand what they need. You’ll learn how to shift out of self-judgment and into deeper self-trust.

  • CBT can help you challenge unhelpful thought patterns and reframe beliefs like “I’m not doing enough” or “I have to be perfect.” This helps reduce anxiety and increase emotional flexibility.

  • Learn simple, evidence-based mindfulness techniques to calm your nervous system, respond (rather than react) in parenting moments, and reconnect with your body and breath.

  • We’ll also integrate practical parenting support tailored to your child’s developmental stage, your values, and your emotional needs as a mother. You don’t need one more rigid parenting method—you need guidance that meets you where you are.
