Feeling Stuck in the Past?
EMDR can help you
Move forward
Maybe you’ve tried to “talk it out” in therapy before, but the same patterns keep showing up:
You still feel triggered by things that “shouldn’t” bother you.
You feel flooded with shame, guilt, or sadness that doesn’t match your present reality.
You’re exhausted from carrying the weight of your past into every relationship, decision and emotional reaction.
You find yourself overreacting—or shutting down—without knowing why.
EMDR therapy was made for this.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help you process unresolved trauma and emotional pain — without having to relive it over and over.
Through a structured process that uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements, tapping, or sound), EMDR helps your brain “unstick” from painful memories and finally file them away, so you can live more fully in the present.
“EMDR therapy is one of the most effective and extensively researched methods for treating trauma.”
— World Health Organization (WHO), 2013
According to a study in the Journal of Traumatic Stress
84%–90% of single-trauma survivors no longer had PTSD after just 3 - 6 sessions.
Who Is EMDR For?
You don’t have to meet a specific diagnosis to benefit from EMDR. It may be a helpful approach for you if you’ve experienced:
A single distressing event (e.g., accident, breakup, medical scare)
Childhood emotional neglect or abuse
Ongoing toxic relationships or emotional manipulation
Chronic anxiety, shame, or self-doubt
Feeling stuck in people-pleasing, perfectionism, or hyper-independence
Unexplained emotional reactions that feel “too big” or confusing
Even if your trauma isn’t something you’d label as “trauma,” your nervous system may still be reacting as if you’re in danger — and EMDR helps your brain finally understand:
That was then. This is now.
Still not sure if EMDR is right for you? That’s okay. Give us a call or shoot us an e-mail and we’ll help you figure it out.
What to Expect from EMDR With Us
EMDR therapy follows an eight-phase process, but here’s the heart of it:
During sessions, we’ll identify the memory or emotion that feels stuck. Then, using bilateral stimulation (like side-to-side eye movements or gentle tapping), your brain begins to reprocess the memory — kind of like what happens during REM sleep!
You stay in control the entire time. You don’t have to go into detail about the memory unless you want to. And you don’t have to relive the trauma — your brain does the healing work internally.
Most people find that, after just a few sessions, the memory feels less charged, and the beliefs connected to it begin to shift.
For example:
“It was my fault.” → “I did the best I could.”
“I’m not safe.” → “I can protect myself now.”
More than 30 controlled studies have shown EMDR to be effective in treating trauma, anxiety, and depression.
8 Phases of an EMDR Session With Us:
Studies show EMDR can reduce or eliminate PTSD symptoms.
-
This initial stage involves understanding your background, identifying potential traumatic memories for treatment, and tailoring our plan for therapy to your specific needs.
-
We begin to build rapport and further discuss the EMDR therapy process which addressing any of your questions or concerns. We will also explore coping strategies you can use if feeling overwhelmed during treatment.
-
We’ll select the event/memory you wish to reprocess and identify related visuals, beliefs, emotions and sensations. We’ll also establish baseline measures of distress (SUDS).
-
We will use bilateral stimulation-this could be eye movements, tapping, or sounds-while revisiting the traumatic event and work towards decreasing your SUDS (subjective measure of distress), thereby creating space for new beliefs, visuals and sensations to emerge.
-
We will work to integrate the positive beliefs and new associations in relation to the targeted memory.
-
We will scan your body for residual tension or discomfort and return to bilateral stimulation to further process any persistent distress.
-
Using grounding techniques you will be brought back to the present and ensure you are feeling calm, grounded, and present.
-
At the start of following sessions, we will check your progress, ensuring that the positive effects have been maintained and determining if further reprocessing is needed, potentially identifying new areas that require attention.
We know this is a big step and we’re here to help you figure out if it’s the right one for you. Reach out to us with any questions we didn’t address. No question or concern is too small.
